A New Phishing Scam Targeting WhatsApp Users

A recent phishing attack spotted in Ireland may be on its way to the United States. Eastern European hackers have a tendency to beta test their social engineering attacks in the U.K. before sending them to America. ESET Ireland, a U.K.-based cybersecurity firm warned: "A dangerous email spam message is dropping into mailboxes, pretending to come from WhatsApp. Its subject says "Missed Voicemail" and the content of the mail just says "New Voicemessage" and has a link called "Play".

Clicking the link will begin the download of trojan malware, which can redirect web pages using javascript code embedded into HTML. The end result is generally additional malware or ransomware that will infect systems and networks.

Social engineering, the practice of deceiving people into divulging information or unintentionally mitigating security, is the most effective method of infecting systems around the globe.  Some experts say that the weakest link in any computer security plan is the user.

The best defense against social engineering is training your employees.  Develop a strong program which includes discussion and examples of current attacks; remind employees it's not just the dealership but its clients that suffer when an infection occurs. Teach them it's every employees responsibility to validate their own email before opening an attachment or clicking a link.

Taking an aggressive stance on malware and virus protection is great, but none of that matters if your employees open the door for the attack. So be proactive; protect your dealership by informing and training your employees on a regular basis.
