Network Security Doesn't Just Mean Computers

If you are like most people working at an auto dealership you rarely, if ever, think of network security. When people do think of it, they typically think of computers. But as we are becoming a mobile-centric society, the threat is expanding. And it's expanding faster and faster each day.

In May, Google removed 50 apps from the Google App Store which were infected with malware that would auto-click adware. These auto-clicks inflated click counts, making additional money for the malware creator on pay-per-click ads. It's estimated that well over 30 million devices could still be infected by this malware, dubbed "Judy".

You may be thinking "if Google can't stop this, how could I?" Google has thousands of employees and millions of dollars to throw at hacking prevention and the average dealership doesn't have resources to compete on that level. The requirement is that you make a reasonable effort to protect consumer data from unauthorized access. A reasonable effort should also include looking at devices that can touch your network, such as cell phones and tablets, even though they are not the traditionally expected devices.

The cyber threat is constantly changing; it's always a game of catch up. It's time to change the way you think about security and to start looking at what you can do reduce your risk.
