Windows 10
It's been nearly two years since Windows 10 was released. Just like any operating system, there are some people who like it and some people who don't. Today, I'd like to touch on some of the benefits of Windows 10 and how they can help your dealership. The primary areas I'll focus on are Windows Defender, Backups, and Encryption.
Windows Defender is an anti-virus and anti-malware solution provided by Microsoft, and it comes free with Windows 10. It has been included in every Windows version since Windows Vista. Older versions of Defender were not always considered the best protection from viruses or malware. It's true that there are better solutions out there, but if your dealership doesn't have the resources, Defender is a marginally acceptable alternative to more expensive anti-virus and anti-malware solutions. It's much better than no solution at all.
A problem that many companies have is that they don't back up their systems often enough. Backups in Windows 10 are easy to use. You can set up 2 different types of backups: file history and system images. File history allows you to back up copies of your files to replace them if something should happen to your computer. A system image backup stores everything on your computer. It allows you to perform a full system restore. Consider setting up a file backup daily and a system backup weekly. It will take some effort, but if you have ever lost a computer with all of its files, you know how valuable a good backup is to business continuity.
The final feature for you to consider is encryption. Windows 10 includes BitLocker as part of all versions. BitLocker is an encryption tool that ensures the data on your hard drive remains secure, even if the computer is turned off or the hard drive is removed. In addition, if you tie the user account to Microsoft Azure, a copy of your encryption key will be stored with Microsoft to ensure you don't lose any data you have encrypted.
Windows 10 includes lots of features that may be of use to you. Do a little research and see if your systems qualify for the free upgrade to Windows 10, and consider upgrading. The security and protection alone are worth the effort.
